Alphonse Maindo is the Director of Tropenbos DR Congo, where he leads efforts to promote sustainable forest management, community-based livelihoods, and the protection of natural resources. With over 30 years of experience working with NGOs, Alphonse is a dedicated advocate for human rights, environmental conservation, and community empowerment.
Alphonse’s leadership at Tropenbos DR Congo focuses on integrating local communities into sustainable forest management initiatives, promoting peacebuilding efforts, and advancing international policy frameworks such as REDD+ and FLEGT.
Alphonse holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris 1) and is a renowned scholar and educator in political science, forest policy, governance, and development. His work spans critical areas such as democratization, post-conflict reconstruction, natural resource governance, land issues, community forestry, and indigenous knowledge. Alphonse is a prolific author, having published numerous books and articles on these topics, furthering the discourse on sustainable development and political stability in the region.
Throughout his career, Alphonse has held key leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Social, Administrative and Political Sciences at the University of Kisangani and Director of the Central African Political Observatory at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaoundé. His deep engagement in policy development is reflected in his role as national coordinator for DR Congo’s LMD reform unit at the Ministry of Higher and University Education, where he was instrumental in shaping the country’s higher education policies.
Alphonse’s commitment to social justice dates back to the early 1990s when he founded a local human rights NGO and began collaborating with national and international human rights organizations. His work in this area continues to inform his approach to fostering inclusive and equitable governance in DR Congo.
