Call for papers: Communities and the timber value chain in South and Central America

the Netherlands - 23 March, 2023

Tropenbos International is calling for contributions to the publication: “Communities and the Timber Value Chain in South and Central America”, which is being carried out within the framework of the Working Landscapes Programme.

The aim of the publication is to disseminate and examine the experiences of communities that engage in timer sales for economic benefits. A more detailed understanding of how communities interact with all actors in the timber value chain is considered key to improve the effectiveness of forest and tree management in the diverse contexts of South and Central America. The publication is aimed at organisations that support or partner with rural communities in forested landscapes.

The publication will include a literature review on the opportunities and barriers communities face engaging in the timber value chain; the call for papers with experiences at the community level; and a synthesis and comparative discussion of the literature findings and lessons learned from the experiences.

Communities and/or their representatives, public, private and civil society support organisations (national and international), governments (local, regional, national and foreign), business partners, professionals and others who have participated in initiatives involving both communities and the timber value chain are invited to share their experiences by writing an article that will be part of the publication.

Authors are asked to develop a text considering the interaction between rural communities and actors in the timber value chain, emphasising commercial, organisational, relational, administrative and technical aspects. It is important that the texts are analytical and not limited only to the description of what happened and the final result, but that sufficient reflections are made on the origins, causes and effects of the shared experience and the lessons learned from it.

If you would like to share your experience, please send a 300-word abstract to Charlotte Benneker (charlotte.benneker@tropenbos.org) and Patricia Uberhuaga (uberhuaga.pat@gmail.com) by 17 April 2023.
